Motivational Books For Artists

These books were written for artists to help them stay motivated and find their own artistic direction

THE RELUCTANT ARTIST : EXTRACT

The sight of a painter at work is irresistibly fascinating to the public. Be aware that the passerby can be the most aggressive critic and will not hesitate to point out what they like or don’t like about your work. Whereas a child looking upon your work will most certainly praise it, but, in the course of the conversation, will probably give valuable insights into what may be wrong with your work.

You can then look at it through open eyes now as opposed to shutting your mind off to the adult critic. A child’s critique can strengthen your ideals and improve the emotional content of your painting.

ART IN A VERY ORDINARY WORLD  :  EXTRACT

We live in a fast evolving world but if you stop and think it is still A Very Ordinary World in our little corner. Life may interrupt or we may have to step back into society for a couple of months to re-energise, but our art is all consuming.

If your spouse/life partner lives in ‘The Ordinary World’ make sure that they understand you ‘the artist’, otherwise they will not understand the language you speak and relationships are hard enough without a communal language. Let them see that they are nurturing an artist.

I STARTED PAINTING A TREE  :  EXTRACT

When I thought of writing my third motivational book this title came to mind because of a particular painting. We, as artists, have to understand that when the painting starts to adopt a different direction, it is imperative that we take notice of that direction.

Dancer on the Beach started as a tree. I was outdoor painting over on Karragarra Island and the silhouette of a tree captured my attention. I usually have a musical theme in my art, so when I started painting, the figure of a dancer revealed itself on my canvas.  Music and Rhythm are represented in my art even when I consciously tried to paint something as simple as a tree.  The emotional content took over.

ART HAS NO BOUNDARIES  : EXTRACT

Find harmony with your art and it will sing; pursue a passion and dedicate your art around it. Art does not exist in a vacuum but is inextricably entangled in the life of society as a whole. Communities engage in the creative arts which can then establish a visual experience for everyone. Be part of this cultural revelation and help the viewer understand the artwork on display.

A RELUCTANT ARTIST IN THE 21st CENTURY : EXTRACT

The finest works of art are those which express the pure imagination of the artist. To admit to having “no imagination” is to accept a boundary which will not allow you to take the next step and you are more concerned with what people will think of your work than actually creating that work. You need to allow your imagination to paint your picture and you will find that your fears are unfounded. It only takes confidence to create.
